How to get to Campitello di Fassa

Campitello di Fassa sits at 1,448 m in Trentino’s Fassa Valley and is best reached via several well-connected airports. The nearest is Bolzano (49 km, 55 min by car), followed by Verona VRN (≈186 km, ~2 h 15 min). Drivers can also choose Innsbruck INN in Austria (≈142 km, just under 2 h on clear roads) or Venice-Treviso TSF (≈155–167 km, ~2 h 15 min). Venice Marco Polo VCE and Brescia VBS are further options at roughly 2 h 35 min and 2 h 50 min, respectively. From the village a modernised Campitello–Col Rodella lift whisks skiers from the 1,448 m base to about 2,415 m in just under seven minutes; the legacy system used two 120-passenger cabins, but a new 3S installation with 18×30-seat cabins is slated to double capacity to around 2,200 riders per hour. Campitello’s compact altitude jump and efficient access make it an ideal gateway to the Sella Ronda circuit while keeping transfer times manageable for winter travellers.

What is Sella Ronda?

The famous Sella Ronda carousel is named after Groupo Sella, a chain of table mountains in the middle of the ski area.
Sella Ronda means “the circle around Sella mountains.”,
Sella means “Saddle” in Italian.
Sella Ronda is considered by many as the most beautiful ski area in the world.

Saas Pordoi(2925m) is where the only lift to the top of Sella mountains. Sassolungo (3181m) in bkgd.

The circle is about 26 km in diameter and is actually comprised of 2 circles: one clockwise, marked in orange and the other counterclockwise, marked in green.

Most of the slopes in the Sella Ronda circle are short, and there is a lot of lifts time – meaning that there are short runs and many chairlifts in the route, so relatively, you spend a lot of time sitting in ski lifts.

Our advice is to use it as a kind of a conveyor that leads you quickly to explore the four ski areas combined in this vast ski area: Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba-Marmolada, and Val di Fassa itself.

The whole area combined comprises 530km of connected ski runs, thus making it the 3rd largest in the world after Portes de Soleil and Three Valleys.

For this, you have to get the Superskidolomiti ski pass, which includes a total of 1200 km of slopes, including Cortina di A’mpezzo, Kronplatz, and many other ski resorts as well.

For beginners, a Val di Fassa ski pass will be enough. The borders of Val di Fassa in the ski area is in Passo Pordoi in the east and Passo Sella in the north.

How to avoid long lift queues in the morning?

One of the big cons of Campitello is the lines in the morning to the Colrodella lift.

The latter was the first lift for people from lower Val di Fassa connecting to the Sella Ronda.

Most people don’t know that the lift company opened a new wind-resistance cable car in Alba di Canazei six years ago.

Alba- Col dei Rossi new cable car.

Alba- Col dei Rossi new cable car.

The new lift connected the Belvedere ski area to the Campiac ski area, thus actually connecting Pozza di Fassa to the Sella Ronda ski area.

The new lift made the lines more bearable as the same number of people now use three ski lifts instead of two.

Belvedere gondola in Canazei. Together with Colrodella and the new cable car in Alba, 3 lifts connects upper Val di Fassa to the big ski area.

We still recommend coming to the Colrodella either before nine or after ten o’clock in the morning. Otherwise, you’ll spend at least half an hour waiting in line.

Campitello has modest nightlife, so it’s a good idea on this vacation not to stay out too late. Instead, wake up early and ride the lift at 8:30, before the queues build up.

It’s also an excellent tip to get out in the morning because you have very long ski trips in this ski area, and you don’t want to be stressed out not coming back to your valley before the lifts are closed.

Regarding the modest nightlife in Campitello, you can still enjoy the nightlife in the centre of Canazei, which is a 30-minute walk from the centre of Campitello or a 20 euro, 5-minute drive in a cab.

In Dolomiti Hotel, at the heart of Canazei, you will find Ceaser’s Keller, which is the best club in the valley, and is usually packed every night around midnight.

Another con of Campitello is that there are no ski runs to the village.

Best tip for staying in Campitello

Instead of standing in line for the Colrodella on the way back, our tip here is to pay a visit to Rifugio des Alps, maybe not the best aprés ski bar in the world but probably the one these with the best views.
Imagine yourself drinking a Bombardino, the local liqueur, and watching the sun painting the mighty cliffs of Sella Ronda as it descends. Priceless!

Conclusions

To conclude, these are our ratings for Campitello:

  • For snowboarders: 7.5. (The number could be higher as you won’t hit a T bar, but because of several flats along the Sella Ronda carousel.)

flat at the crossing from val gardena to campitello on the green circle. Don’t slow here.

  • Advanced skiers: 9.
  • Intermediate skiers: 9.
  • For beginners: 6, (the reason is that beginners learn at a small ski run in village that is not connected with the big ski area and usually will demand a ski bus ride if your hotel is located next to the Colrodella.)
  • Freestylers: 8. There are several ski parks and border-cross in the area as well as jumping airbag in Canazei snow park.
  • Free riders: 7, relatively to the enormous size of the ski area, there are not too many off-piste areas, but a tip from us, ask the locals about the off-piste from sass pordoi, aka the terrace of the Dolomites, as well as the hidden valley

  • Nightlife: 6, don’t expect more than some local bars to grab a beer.
  • Aprés ski: 6, more for romantic couples than to party animals we will add that Val di Fassa is a right destination for group that have non-skiers as many cable cars can take them to picks with views and restaurants, which they can meet with the skiers of the group.

Our total score for Campitello is 7.5.

Our bonus tip for Campitello  is to leave your gear at the storage at the top of the Colrodella peak. It will save you 100 meters of a flat walk. Also, it’s nice to dance with snickers at Refuge des Alps instead of your ski boots. If you do so, don’t forget to bring another pair of shoes for the vacation, in case you will finish your skiing day in Canazei.
